“What weird and extremely bored god?” Poppy asked out of curiosity. At the mention of the wounded polar bear, her eyes welled with tears. “Why don’t we talk about something happy? What’s your favourite food?” she suggested, trying to smile.

“Himeros. Have you ever spoken to him?” Joni responded. She frowned and took some of her hair that was in a ponytail and began twirling it. “If food is a happy thing, then alright. I don’t really have a favorite, to be quite honest.”

“I don’t think I’d want to kill it either,” Poppy confessed with a shake of her head. “It must be special to the thing that created it, and I don’t want to be the one to ruin it. Plus, have you ever heard the sound of an animal in pain? I hate it.”

“From what I’ve heard, Poseidon hates most people, so he must’ve dumped the creature there.” Joni sighed. “Depends on the animal. When it’s something like a cow, or anything bigger than that, it irritates me.”

“I haven’t done anything bad to them! Promise!” Poppy says defensively. “I still think that sea monster’s real, though. Do you know how Greeks do funerals? Would I be allowed to put flowers on your tomb? Maybe irises… or poppies! I love poppies. What’s your favourite flower?” the younger girl then asked.

“Maybe they’re just messing with you because you’re younger than them.” Joni told her. “It’s as if you’re saying I will in fact be attacked by a sea monster. But I do think you can put flowers when I’m dead.” She chuckled. “I don’t have a favorite flower because I think all of them look nice, but irises are alright.”

“Aw, why not? His songs are fabulous!” Poppy defends, crossing her arms as much as she can muster in her position, which wasn’t really that much. “Oh? So where do you usually stay? I hope it’s not here.” Her voice drops when she continues speaking. “One of Poseidon’s kids said there was a sea monster in here. Do you think that’s true?”

“I don’t know, I just don’t like his songs!” The older girl replied, bringing her hands up. “No, I usually hang out where the arts and crafts are or by the amphitheater. This is actually the first time I’ve been here.” She raised an eyebrow at Poppy. “…Sea monster?”

“Poseidon? Really? That’s so sad. Maybe he needs a hug,” Poppy suggests. “I once saw a wounded elephant in the zoo. It was really sad. It wouldn’t even stand up.” 

“That’s what the weird and extremely bored god told me, at least. Also, I don’t think hugging Poseidon is a good idea.” She frowned. “…I don’t like thinking about wounded animals. I once saw a documentary that showed a wounded polar bear that ended up starving itself to death because it couldn’t get food.”

Poppy’s grin faded and she pointed out, “I haven’t thought of it that way, but then again, I have a weapon. Maybe I can kill it!” At that moment, it would just like to be pointed out that Poppy wasn’t serious. She couldn’t kill or even harm a fly if she tried.

Joni looked straight into Poppy’s eyes, poker faced. “…You wouldn’t do that, would you?” she told the young girl. “No offense, I can imagine you poking an Ares kid, but I can’t imagine you standing a few feet away from a sea monster with loads of tentacles.”

“That’s mean,” Poppy expresses. “Well, I always think that a positive attitude is the way to think about life, and I’m positive that your death will be caused by a sea monster in one way or another. So irises it is, then!”

“…You’ve got quite an odd way of being positive.” Joni remarked while keeping her eyebrow raised at Poppy. “Well, I’m not saying that it will happen to you, but what if— just a what if— you get attacked by a sea monster before I do?”

“Yeah, a sea monster! Like a kraken or something only not really because they said it was way scarier with more tentacles and it eats children who play by the beach at night because they disturb its sleeping time, so I think you should stay away from the beach at night so you don’t get eaten even if you’re too old to be a kid,” Poppy answers in one breath and quickly takes in more gulps of air.

Joni laughed and gave her friend a light pat on the back. “I think the Poseidon kids were just trying to scare you for reasons we’ll never know.” she commented. “If there was a sea monster here, I don’t think we’d even be allowed to set foot around this area. Should a kraken-like creature eat me, feel free to spit on my cabin and say ‘I told you so’.”

“I like Queen and ABBA and Rick Astley, if that helps,” Poppy offers with a slight laugh. “I’ll remember to stop by your cabin if I’ll go and play with them! I just don’t know where the Iris cabin is,” she added sheepishly. “It should be rainbow-coloured so I can remember it easily!”

“I approve of Queen and ABBA, just not Rick Astley.” Joni said shrugging a bit. “Oh, it’s not hard to find my cabin. It’s just, you know… there. Like the rest of the cabins. But I don’t stay in my cabin a lot, unlike my other half siblings.”
